Marina, I just realised, now that Frédéric knows his father is dead, he would say: He left us all years ago, and we'd never heard from him since.
WE'D - because now there is an exact time frame that is being referred to, from when he was five up until the father's death.
You would only use 'we've' if he knew or assumed that his father was still alive.
