Hello Mark - re-reading the text, I think in the context this sentence would work better if you wrote: Carlos - Well . . . your father has left us.

Because in the next sentence Frédéric says "I'm sorry for your loss." (Maybe he thinks this Carlos fellow is a son from another marriage and therefore says 'left us' - ie: Carlos thinks Frédéric has understood him thus and then seeks to explain by saying that his father is deceased
