This IS what the expression means and now that you mention it, "sunk to the bottom " seems redundant. However, if we want to stay as close as possible to the author's style perhaps it would be more faithful to say "The ship has gone to the bottom." It's a literal translation but that's the way he put it originally.

Or, 'The ship has sunk.'
