“Dit waren momenten waarop veel mensen uit ons team, vooral zwarte mensen, stopten.”
Twijfelde u toen zelf te stoppen?

“These were moments when a lot of people from our team, especially black people, quit.”
Did you consider quitting yourself at that time?

Thanks, Wendy.
by markvanroode 6 months, 1 week agoHi Mark, within the context to get the meaning across in English, you would have to use 'consider'.
by Merlin57 6 months, 1 week agoThe phrase 'Did you hesitate to quit yourself at that time', means he was intending to quit, but had doubts about whether he should or not, whereas I understand that he is being asked whether he also considered/thought about quitting at the time, like so many others did, but his reply is that he will not quit under any circumstances.
Thanks, Wendy. Whether your suggested translation expresses very well the essene of the phrase. The verb twijfelen (German zweifeln) refers to a mind that isn't sure/is torn/is in doubt. Another translation could be: Were you in doubt yourself whether you should quit at that time. German: Haben Sie damals gezögert, selbst aufzuhören? I think, your English alternative sounds better in English though.
