Elle se tenait assise sur un joli siège, sa robe blanche se relevait très haut sur ses jambes, qu’elle tenait croisées l’une sur l’autre et le chien qui était couché à ses pieds était de la même couleur que ses bas.

She was sitting on a pretty seat with her white dress riding high up her crossed legs, the dog lying at her feet was of the same colour as her stockings.

No, that's fine :))
by Merlin57 2 weeks, 4 days agoThank you; I've added "was" of the same colour . Do you want it erased?
by marina 2 weeks, 4 days agoMarina - can I suggest: She was sitting on a pretty seat with her white dress riding high up her crossed legs, the dog lying at her feet of the same colour as her stockings.
by Merlin57 2 weeks, 4 days ago'pulled up high' suggests that she has pulled the dress up deliberately, whereas 'riding high' leaves it open as to whether it is the natural result of her crossing her legs, or she may have done it deliberately.
I would tend to use the word 'pretty' for 'joli', because 'nice' is a nondescript English word, that tends to often need something added to it to explain how it is 'nice'. Is it nice and comfortable, or nice and pretty, or 'nice' in the sense of homely . . . my question is 'how is it 'nice'?
