Le garçon qui les conduisait paraissait content et plein de force : il appuyait sa main sur la croupe du cheval de devant, et son fouet, qu’il tenait très droit, était tout entouré de rubans dont les bouts flottaient au vent.

The boy who was leading them seemed satisfied and full of energy: he rested his hand on the rump of the front horse, and his whip, which he held upright, was wrapped in ribbons whose ends fluttered in the wind.

Thanks Wendy.
by marina 2 weeks, 4 days agoHello Marina; may I suggest 'rested his hand on the rump of the front horse'
by Merlin57 2 weeks, 4 days agoThe word 'croup' meaning 'the rump of a quadruped' is probably not well known by most English readers (possibly mainly by readers who are familiar with the anatomy of horses), but the word 'rump' would be immediately understood.
I also was not aware of this meaning of 'croup'. I was only familiar with 'croup' as a respiratory infection.
