Mark, I think it is a question of having to force themselves to eat so many slices. (cramming or stuffing the slices of cake down their throats) So 'we'll each have six . . ' doesn't give that sense of having to force themselves to do it.

The same as the original translation OR Charles – Okay, so we'll each help ourselves to six slices of galette.

I'm not familiar with the term 'to cram down'. How about: Charles – Okay, so we'll each have six slices of galette.

sorry to be 'pingelig', but I think it would work even better with 'have to'.
