Wendy, I was looking for a specific word to translate "bouffer".
Bouffer (verb) and la bouffe (food) are very familiar words with almost a negative even rude meaning.
Bouffer = manger salement - en grandes quantités...
La bouffe = la nourriture/le repas en général ordinaire, pas du tout raffiné, mauvais...

Okay, that's a new expression for me 'chowing down' 😱 - obviously very much an American expression. I've never heard it used in Australia, although the concept of 'chow' as food is known and used.
I would probably have used something like 'stuffing yourself' 😀
