I was going to come back to this sentence, Mark, but I see you've already attended to it. I would agree with gypsies, simply because it is a more familiar term for most English readers.
Should it be in plural - from some gypsies ? Don't think it makes much difference and doesn't affect the plural form in the next unit.

France, they’re sometimes called Roma in English and that connotation includes gypsies.
