Ainsi va le monde ; on travaille, on projette, on arrange d’un côté ; la fortune accomplit de l’autre : et, depuis l’affamé conquérant qui voudrait avaler la terre, jusqu’au paisible aveugle qui se laisse mener par son chien, tous sont le jouet de ses caprices ; encore l’aveugle au chien est-il souvent mieux conduit, moins trompé dans ses vues, que l’autre aveugle avec son entourage.

Such is the world; we work, we plan, we arrange on one side; fortune accomplishes on the other: and, from the hungry conqueror who would swallow the earth, to the peaceful blind man who lets himself be led by his dog, all are the plaything of his whims; even so, the blind man with the dog is often better led, less deluded in his views, than the other blind man with his entourage.
