Barbarita  opened each eye like a calf's when her mother, sitting her on the counter, showed her fans without letting her touch them; and she would become engrossed in contemplating those cute figures, which didn't seem like people to her, but rather  'Chinese', with round, smooth faces like rose petals, all of them smiling and silly, but very pretty, just like those houses open on all sides and those trees that looked like little basil plants... And to think that the trees were actually tea, those twisted leaves whose juice is taken for stomach aches...!

And to think that the trees were nothing less than tea, these twisted little leaves, whose juice is taken for a stomachache...!
