Man könnte es auch so schreiben: 'But the tapping went ahead very slowly (note word order) and again and again the girl had some reason or other as to why the journeyman had to be brought/fetched up from the cellar.'
Wie du weißt, gibt es meistens mehrere Möglichkeiten einen Satz zu schreiben
