Over elvens og fergestedets mørke hevet åsene seg, disse tidlig snebare åser, ennå rustbrune og jernharde før våren, brått belyste, kaldt tindrende, grantoppen var likesom fulle av sølvskillinger.

Beyond the darkness of the river and the ferry landing, the hills rose, those hills that shed their snow so early, still rust-brown and hard as iron before the coming of spring, suddenly lit by the sun, glittering with a cold brilliance, the tops of the fir trees seemed to be strewn with silver coins.

This is a thoughtful translation. I would hardly change a word of it. Only the punctuation might be improved. We have noted in the past how the author uses commas in extended passages in a way that doesn't quite work in English, but this time I think it would be just fine if we left the punctuation just as it is in Norwegian along with 2 slight changes shown here in parenthesis: "Beyond the darkness of the river and the ferry landing, the hills rose, those hills that shed their snow so early, still rust-brown and hard as iron before the coming of spring, suddenly lit by the sun, (glittering) with a cold brilliance, the tops of the fir trees seemed (to be) strewn with silver coins."
