Discussion

Minister was used in the translation from the German version of the novel. Chapter VI, units 143 and 144. Thanks, David.

Wow. I'm learning so much English here. Of course I understand it in French but didn't know it's used in English as well, and with about the same meaning too. Thanks. One more bone to pick though: "...when we went to the confirmation...". Please remove the definite article.
When we were 13 - 15 years old we went to Confirmation. That's how we said it in English, never with the definite article. We would have just said "...when we went to Confirmation...".
Also, we associated the word "priest" only with the Catholic church and therefor we would NEVER refer to our Pastor Ulvilden as our "priest" but rather as our "minister". We had just joined the new American Lutheran Church in 1960. Before that we belonged to the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Norway which at the time of this novel, 1928, was completely dominant there. I suppose it would be okay to translate "presten" as "the priest" but American Lutheran readers would find it odd.

Revenants: ghosts that return.

I translate "gjengangere" in this context as "hauntings" or "spectral beings". In McKay's Modern Norwegian dictionary I found the definition "spectral" which is a new English word for me, so I looked that up and found "...ghostly, phantom-like, or relating to a specter (a ghost)"
