OR even better, "...not even the youth had the usual and immediate freshness of youth".

There are 3 better possibilities: 1.) "...not even the youth had their usual and immediate freshness" OR 2.) "...not even youth had its usual and immediate freshness" OR 3.) "...not even the youth had youth's usual and immediate freshness". I prefer # 1.).
