Thank you, Mark. I like that better than 'pilots elder, but now that I've found my hard copy of McKay's Modern Norwegian I've found in there a translation of 'losoldermann' - "master-pilot" which I like even better. I consider the source as authoritative. They go on to translate "losformann" as "Deputy Master-pilot" and "losgutt" as pilot's apprentice so it seems to be part of the terminology used in the profession.
