I'm afraid some of the beginning may be pure guessing ( by comparison with old forms of French). At least it was in the beginning, but I have found examples where "fare instanza" was insisting.

"couldn't in any way" was my way of translating the 2 means of could: they were not able to and they didn't know how to. You can find something better.
