SCENE 9 – Homeless.
A homeless woman enters and settles onto the bench. A homeless man arrives.
The homeless man – Hey, that’s my bench!
The homeless woman – Your bench?
The homeless man – Exactly.
The homeless woman – It’s a public bench; how could it be *your* bench?
The homeless man – You’re new here, aren’t you?
The homeless woman – Why?
The homeless man — You don't know the rules.
The homeless woman — What rules?
The homeless man — THE rules. The law of the street.
The homeless woman — Who came up with these rules? You?
The homeless man — No.
The homeless woman — Why should this bench be yours.
The homeless man — Well . . . Because I’ve been sleeping on it for a week now.
The homeless woman — There are plenty of other benches in this park. And the square's closed at night. Just get another one.
The homeless man — Yeah, but I’m used to this one.
The homeless woman — You seem a bit of a homebody for a homeless person.
The homeless man — A homebody? Me?
The homeless woman – You don’t know what that means, do you?
The homeless man - No.
The homeless woman – Go on, have a seat. I’ll take another bench if you’re so set on this one.
The homeless man hesitates for a moment, then sits down.
The homeless man – You’ll see: when you no longer have a home, habits are all you have left.
The homeless woman – I hope I don’t get used to sleeping outside.
The homeless man – We all say that. At first... How long have you been on the street?
The homeless woman – I don’t know... A month. And you?
The homeless man – Me, I’ve lost track. Fifteen years. Twenty years. The street is like prison. Except you’re locked up outside.
The homeless woman - I've just got out of prison. Believe me, I prefer to be outside. And you, have you ever been to jail?
The homeless man — No.
The homeless woman — I'm not surprised. You look like a nice guy.
The homeless man — Sometimes I wish I looked like a bad guy. It’s better for commanding respect on the street. (A pause) Was there no one waiting for you when you got out of prison?
The homeless woman – I was already having a hard time with my family before... When you’ve done time, you’re like a pariah; people prefer to avoid you. And yet, prison isn’t contagious.
The homeless man – What did you do to end up in the slammer?
The homeless woman — My boss was sticking too close to me for my liking. I slit his carotid artery with a craft knife.
The homeless man — With a track record like that, it’s not going to help you find another job.
The homeless woman — I’m off down south for the grapes harvest. Luckily, the farming industry’s short of workers, so they’re not too fussy. At least I’ll have a place to stay.
The homeless man — During the harvest, anyway.
The homeless woman — Don’t you want to come with me?
The homeless man — I’m not used to working anymore. You need to have slept in a bed to go to work in the morning.
The homeless woman — Over there, they’ll give you a bed.
The homeless man — I’m not sure I still know how to sleep in a bed. Be careful. For now, the streets are yours. When you’ve forgotten how to sleep in a bed, that’s when you’ll really be on the street.
The homeless woman – You can have your bench back.
The homeless man – Thank you.
She walks away. He watches her leave, seems to hesitate, then stands up in turn.
The homeless man – Wait...!
He leaves.
