Perhaps because of when the book was written, or perhaps due to an error, it actually refers to "entrarle a alguien algo por el ojo, o por los ojos" (that’s how it appears in the DRAE, under 'por expresiones'). I realised this whilst reading and interpreting it, and confirmed it there.
