Rocas formidables, olas, playa con
caracolitos, praderas verdes, setos, callejas llenas de arbustos,
helechos y líquenes, veredas cuyo término no se sabía, caseríos rústicos
que al caer de la tarde despedían de sus abollados techos humaredas
azules, celajes grises, rayos de sol dorando la arena, velas de
pescadores cruzando la inmensidad del mar, ya azul, ya verdoso, terso un
día, otro aborregado, un vapor en el horizonte tiznando el cielo con su
humo, un aguacero en la montaña y otros accidentes de aquel admirable
fondo poético, favorecían a los amantes, dándoles a cada momento un
ejemplo nuevo para aquella gran ley de la Naturaleza que estaban
cumpliendo.

Imposing rocks, waves, a beach with tiny shells, green meadows, hedgerows, narrow lanes thick with bushes, ferns and lichens, footpaths whose end one could not see, rustic farmsteads from whose dented roofs blue wisps of smoke rose at dusk, grey clouds, rays of sunlight gilding the sand, fishermen’s sails crossing the boundless sea, by turns blue and green, smooth one day, rough the next, a steamship on the horizon staining the sky with its smoke, a rainstorm in the mountains and other features of that marvellous poetic background, all favoured the lovers, offering them at every moment a fresh illustration of that great law of Nature they were fulfilling.
