'Madroños' here does not refer to a plant or fruit, but rather a detail on clothing: tassels.

Sorry Mark I like your version. Just forget the trees and I'll upvote it. I think, literally, it should be "arbutus-coloured mantilla, " but it is a surprising comparison.
