it's redundant.
The use of inversion to mean 'if' is rather formal. It sounds fine in this text
'even' + inversion instead of 'even if' is really unusual.

Yes : "her account"
But: "He could not have said it (the word of comment), even if he had wished to,..." is correct. Maybe: He couldn't have said one, even if...
To use the inversion "had he wished", better delete the "even" .
