by Merlin57 2 months, 2 weeks agoTom, I too was perplexed by the meaning within the context of the story. At first I thought it meant that she was not quite right in her mind. But on second reading, I think that it actually means that she is bent over somewhat - that her spine is no longer straight, and that she thinks it could be a genetic problem that her child might inherit. This is why she is so overjoyed to see that 'he is straight!.
