Mark, 'wetzten unwillig auf den Stühlen' means - to shift uncomfortably (move uncomfortably) (so they're not shuffling their chairs, rather they are moving on/in their chairs/seats . . .
'dass man ihnen . . . aufdrängte. - that this was being forced upon them.

'The people shifted uncomfortably on their chairs/in their seats as if annoyed that this memory was being forced upon them.'
(to shift on your chair, or in your seat is a traditional way of expressing this. It is a small movement.
