Mark, I wonder about - 'as if it had crashed' - in the context it sounds like a contradiction, as it has not yet hit 'crashed into' the water, what do you think of:
'It looked as if the strange aircraft were crippled and about to crash into the Black Sea, to sink beneath the waves at any moment.
