And this silence...It was the same silence that I had felt so oppressively outside on the heath that morning; the silence that one should not listen to because then one only hears a confusion of strange sounds, a myriad of cries, and finally a distant and heavy roar that no longer belongs to this world...I needed to hear human voices; I wanted to hear own my voice.

Thanks, Wendy. I think a 'myriad of cries' is better, too.

Mark, I only hesitated here because of 'myriads'. 'a myriad of cries' is what I would have instinctively written, but having done some research, I discover that at least in American English, both 'myriad' and 'myriads' is fully accepted. I have reached the end of the 1500's in my listening to the podcast series on The History of English and continue to be fascinated and overwhelmed even by the amount of information to digest!
