Mark, since the previous sentence refers specifically to the ship, not to the story of its launching and disappearance but to the ship itself, it seems clear to me that the word "det" here also refers just to the ship which neither of them actually saw. So I would translate it as "Now I have the strange thought that it never existed at all."
