This the first occurrence of the word "passiar" which here is contained in the word "passiarende". (By the way, the Norwegian text is missing the space in "små passiarende".) It was mistranslated. Quite honestly, I was unfamiliar with it and none of the online dictionaries contained it. Finally, I remembered I have an excellent hard bound McKay's Modern Norwegian and found it there. Passiar - (small) talk, gossip, chat. So the more accurate translation is "Some youngsters sat on a bench by the long wall chatting"...
