they are both correct but one does not have to follow the very heavy style of the Spanish version
by Boot2 8 months, 2 weeks agoBoth are correct. The one with "were" is fine. When you read "some of which provided ..." You expect something like : "some of which provided pleasant shade to..." and you read twice before getting the meaning.
