In her agitated state of mind she did not realise exactly what was taking place and her sudden fear of the passing shadow somehow blended with her subconscious feeling of guilt at being better off than so many others, and all at once her indolent and at the same time turbulent imagination terrorised her with the thought that she was being followed.
