Hello Pierre, I only know of a 'footwell' - a recessed compartment in front of the seats. As a 'well' refers to a hole or recess, maybe it refers to a gap between two seats. As it would have been an automobile manufactured around the turn of the century, it is an open car. Joyce is not specific in his use of 'well', and I am not an automobile expert, I can only imagine approximately what he might mean. Sorry I can't be of more help.
