All other vowels in the Korean alphabet are combinations of these three primitive elements — and the vowel-harmony principles that govern Korean phonology (the distinction between “bright” and “dark” vowels that determines which vowels can appear together within a single morpheme) are encoded directly into the visual structure of the letters.
