How do I upload a text for translation?

You are encouraged to translate the text in the languages, other than English, on Translatihan.com (French, Dutch, German, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese). The final translations will be posted in the FAQ subtopic discussion and form the basis for future more permanent guidelines.

1) Select the text you like to submit for translation. Consider whether there could be copyright infringement. Literary texts over 100 years after first publication, Wikipedia articles, and government documents in the public domain are usually OK.

2) Prepare the text prior to uploading, e.g as a MS Word file or Mac equivalent. The texts looks best when paragraphs are separated by a blank line. The TL program splits the text in translation units, usually one or several sentences. The units are cut off after a period. This can be a problem after multiple initials, e.g. P.G. Wodehouse is cut off after P.G.. German dates are cut off after the period following the date, e.g. 12. mai 2017. So, you may wish to leave these periods off. The program at this time cannot handle pictures, photographs, maps and tables, so eliminate these from the text or select a text without them. Give proper references to the text, author(s), date and source of publication, etc.

3) You are now ready to upload the text. Click on the "Upload an Article" tab at the top.

4) Specify language of the text to be submitted in the drop-down box. There are currenly 7 languages; English, French, Dutch, German, Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese. A text submitted in a specific language can be translated into the six other languages. Check that the language selected is indeed the language of the text.

5) Insert the title of the text in the Title box.

6) Highlight the text in the source document, copy it and paste it into the "Body box." To make the text look good after it has been uploaded, check for blank lines between paragraphs, correct any spelling errors, etc.

7) Press the "Submit Query" button. The text is now submitted and ready for translation. Enjoy translating.
