by anitafunny 5 months, 3 weeks agoPerhaps, "There was something in the beauty of his face that dissuaded them". "Them" being the "... men who fell silent... ". "Dissuaded", the opposite of "persuaded", which prevented any further obscene talk. The handsome face hardly rebuked (scolded) anyone, but definitely prevented further obscenity.
