Wir gehen alle Jahre zweimal ins Opernhaus in eine recht schöne Oper, und damals haben wir uns gar bis in den zweiten Rang verstiegen, wo wir ganz stolz und preislich saßen und vornehme Gesichter machten und dachten, es käme wohl noch mal eine Zeit, da wir noch tiefer sinken würden, bis unten ins Parkett, von wo die glänzenden Vollmonde wohlsituierter, behäbiger Rentiers zu uns emporleuchteten.

We attend the opera house twice a year to enjoy some exceptional performances. On one occasion, we managed to secure seats in the second tier, where we sat proudly and in style. We put on distinguished expressions, imagining that there might come a time when we would find ourselves sitting even lower, in the stalls, looking up at the bright, shining faces of well-off rentiers above us.
