Ja, ich finde bull's eye lantern lustiger ... I've done some research on these old antique lantern's. A bull's eye lantern uses a lens to focus the beam and illuminate a concentrated area, not really that small, and not controllable. A "shielded lantern" has flaps that can be adjusted to illuminate a small area through a slit, and thus can be "thrown open" to reveal a large area. For this reason and the way he uses the lantern in other parts of the story, I believe a "shielded lantern" fits better. I've corrected my translation above. ;-)
