Vorschlag Tom: I find the sentence a bit awkward as translated - I think it is the use of 'now' followed by the past tense, which upon much reflection, I would tend to leave out.
'The next morning when The Martiniere described to her mistress all the horrors of the previous night in the most vivid colours, she was trembling and shaking as she handed her the mysterious box.'
