Pauline, ici le verbe rabattre nous trompe, en fait il referme la plaque de fer (pas "down") en la rabattant vers le haut.

Could I suggest:
"the other one folds down the heavy iron plate...."
and would something like "and landing among us with a sound like the clattering of tin cans" make more sense as there would be a lot of metal involved I would imagine?
