Chapitre 1 | Je suis né à York, Angleterre en 1632. Mon père était Allemand et ma mère était Anglaise. Le nom de mon père était Kreutznaer, mais les gens en Angleterre ont commencé à l'appeler Crusoe. La famille de ma mère s'appelait Robinson. C'est pour cette raison que je me nomme Robinson Crusoé.

J'avais deux frères plus âgés. L'ainé a rejoint l'armée et fut tué au combat. Celui du milieu a disparu et nous n'avons plus jamais entendu parler de lui. J'ai été bien instruit et mon père voulait que j'étudie le droit, mais je rêvais de prendre la mer. Rien n'aurait pu me faire rester à la maison et devenir avocat.

J'avais 18 ans, quand mon père m'a appelé de sa chambre. Il était vieux et malade, et il devait rester au lit. Mon père voulait savoir, pourquoi je désirais partir en mer. Je pourrais rester à la maison, étudier et vivre heureux dans mon pays. Il m'a dit que voyager sur la mer était dangereux. Il m'a prévenu que j'allais perdre la paix et le confort de ma maison, si j'allais à la mer. Mon père m'a aussi dit, que si j'allais à l'étranger, je pourrais mourir, comme mon frère aîné. Il a commencé à pleurer et il n'a pas pu continuer.

Le conseil et les mises en garde de mon père m'ont fait réfléchir. J'ai peu à peu oublié mes rêves de navigation. Cependant ma décision de rester à la maison ne dura pas. J'ai décidé de parler à ma mère, et de lui dire que je voulais voyager. Je lui ai dit ô combien je voulais y aller. Je lui ai dit combien je voulais voir le monde. Je lui ai demandé de parler à mon père, comme je voulais qu'elle change son opinion. Je lui ai promis que si je n'aimais pas la mer, je reviendrais. Ma mère n'était pas d'accord. Elle ne voulait pas que je parte à l'étranger.

Je restais un année de plus à la maison. Je pensais tout le temps à mes parents et à mon rêve. Un jour en septembre, je me trouvais à la ville de Hull. Un de mes amis partait pour Londres avec le bateau de son père. Je fus invité à partir gratuitement avec lui. Je n'étais pas prêt et mes parents ne savaient rien de tout cela, mais je prenais le bateau en ce jour de septembre.
C'est ainsi que commencèrent mes malheureuses aventures.

Chapter 1

I was born in York, England in 1632. My father was German and my mother was English. My father’s name was Kreutznaer, but people in England started to call him Crusoe. My mother’s family was called Robinson. This is why I am called Robinson Crusoe.
