Trump also used the pardon ceremony to poke fun at what is expected to be an oncoming flurry of investigations by a new House majority next year.

He said Tuesday that while both turkeys have “good fortune” and will live out the rest of their days at Virginia Tech under the care of poultry scientists and vets, their time at so-called Gobbler’s Rest “won’t entirely be a rest.” But Trump’s two turkey pardons as president have both been tinged with political humor. In 2017, the president joked that while he frequently sought to overturn many Obama-era policies via executive order, "I have been informed by the White House counsel's office that Tater and Tot's pardons cannot, under any circumstances, be revoked,” referring to the last pair of birds Obama spared from the Thanksgiving dinner table.

But following Trump’s jokes, he sought to project a message of unity before officially pardoning Peas. “All joking aside, this is a time for Americans to unite together in the spirit of love, understanding, unity, and joy, as one very proud American family,” Trump said.

Trump jokes that turkey pardon was marred by unfair election claims.

By Caitlin Oprysko, Politico, November 20, 2018.

President Donald Trump on Tuesday used the annual presidential turkey pardoning to offer a message of unity heading into the holiday season — but first, he couldn’t resist taking a few digs at Democrats who contested heated midterm races.

Trump announced that Peas beat out Carrots in an online White House poll to decide which bird would receive the pardon, but joked the process was marred by controversy.

“The winner of this vote was conducted by a fair and open election conducted on the White House website. This was a fair election,” he said in the Rose Garden ceremony. “Unfortunately, Carrots refused to concede and demanded a recount and we are still fighting with Carrots. I will tell you we've come to a conclusion. Carrots, I'm sorry to tell you, the result did not change. It’s too bad for Carrots.”

Trump’s quip appeared directed at the elections in Georgia and Florida where Democratic candidates only conceded over the weekend after challenging the initial vote tallies. Trump himself raged against the slow tabulation of votes in Florida’s Senate and gubernatorial races as well as Georgia’s gubernatorial race, where the GOP candidates Trump backed ultimately prevailed.

On Monday, Georgia’s Democratic gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams said that she did not consider the state’s election to be free or fair, accusing Republican Gov.-elect Brian Kemp of seeking to suppress minority votes in his role overseeing the state’s elections. A few days earlier, she said that while she admitted Kemp would be the next governor, she wouldn't call her acknowledgment a concession.

Trump also used the pardon ceremony to poke fun at what is expected to be an oncoming flurry of investigations by a new House majority next year.

He said Tuesday that while both turkeys have “good fortune” and will live out the rest of their days at Virginia Tech under the care of poultry scientists and vets, their time at so-called Gobbler’s Rest “won’t entirely be a rest.”
