2018 Initiatives Increased Membership / Donations Our trail network has reached a point where the rider volume and size of the network has rendered unsustainable without a monetary contribution from trail users.

Membership Rates For 2018 •Individual Membership: $55 •Family Membership: $150 •Corporate Membership: $500 More details about the memberships can be found at: www.velomsm.com/en/membership Trail Passes for 2018 *trail passes are considered donations, amounts are suggestions •Biking Donation: $10 •Hiking Donation: $5 You will see new welcome signage in the parking lot to this effect come spring.

Communication We are beefing up our communication strategy. In the past we have not done a spectacular job conveying trail closures, and poor riding conditions. Going forward we will be posting trail status updates on a weekly basis to keep everyone informed about trail conditions.

We have also added a trail status bar on the front page of our website to make it very clear as to the condition of the network.

Reconstruction The flash flooding on October 30th caused some severe damage to Growler, Lug-Tread and Slingshot. Rebuilding the damage sections of trail is our highest priority come spring.

General Maintenance As the ridership has increased certain portions of the trail network are starting to show significant wear and tear. These areas will be prioritized and tackled accordingly. The larger maintenance projects will be tackled by paid trail crew, smaller areas will be done by volunteer trail days to maximize efforts.

As we prioritize maintenance priorities we will share them publicly.

New Construction After years of focus on beginner and intermediate trails, the next trail construction project will finally be a large build of a long black diamond trail, similar in difficulty to Lager. The prioritization of this project will depend on our success of our maintenance plan as well as some fundraising specifically for this project. You will see fundraising information coming out shortly.

Mountain Fest Our big fundraising festival returns once again this year! The dates have been finalized and it will be held on July 21-23. Last year’s Mountain Fest was the largest to date, and this year we intend to make it even bigger and better.

Velo MSM Winter Trail Update Happy New Year! We are still reeling from the damage that occurred as a result of the rainstorms and flooding in October, so unfortunately, the trails are not in their typical winter condition. With winter now in full force, there are a few things to be aware of if you are using the Velo MSM trail network.

1.Growler and Lug-Tread are CLOSED to all traffic until further notice. Please do not access these trails by bike, on foot, or on skis.

2.Lake Loop trails have sections which could be hazardous. Exercise caution, whether biking or hiking. Be prepared to stop or use an alternate route, if required.

3.TTOP is in typical winter condition, and is accessible.

4.Winter Trails ARE NOT patrolled or maintained. The Velo MSM are trails are not maintained for active use in the winter. Keep this in mind and use them at your own risk.

Fat Biking Fat biking is permitted on Velo MSM trails HOWEVER they are not groomed or prepared specifically for Fat biking. They are used for multiple activities in the winter. When there have been significant snowshoe traffic the trails run well, without that they do not. So conditions are always variable. Where the trail goes across a ski run the Fat biker needs to get off their bike and avoid as much of the ski run as possible. The intersection between Cookies Climb/Slingshot and the Cheval Blanc ski runs is the most significant area for being cautious. Fat bike riding on the ski runs is not permitted during ski hill operating hours. At other times grooming equipment and ski-doos can be operating on the ski runs, creating a hazard.

There are new groomed cross-country ski trails on the golf course that are maintained by Expedition Lac Ste Marie (link). Fat bikes are permitted on these groomed trails with the requirement that no one rides on the track set for skiers.

Spring Our focus in the spring will be to restore the trails to the fun and challenging conditions you have come to expect, with work on Growler and Lug-Tread being our #1 priority. We are as disappointed as you that they are closed until further notice, but we will let you know as soon as they are rideable again.
